While responding to a domestic call on February 23, 2025, Deputy Sergeant Martin Shields Jr of the Hinds County Sheriff's Office lost his life after being shot.
A female had requested help in retrieving her belongings from a home. When Deputy Sergeant Martin Shields and another deputy arrived, a male from inside the home began shooting at them. The suspect also shot his wife and another female who were trying to flee the home.
A female had requested help in retrieving her belongings from a home. When Deputy Sergeant Martin Shields and another deputy arrived, a male from inside the home began shooting at them. The suspect also shot his wife and another female who were trying to flee the home.
The women were later transported to the hospital. When other responding officers entered the home, they discovered the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect had a lengthy criminal history including seven felonies and 18 misdemeanor arrests but there had been no convictions.
Deputy Sergeant Shields had served with the Hinds County Sheriff's Office for nine months. Prior to joining the Hinds County Sheriff's Office, Shields had worked for the Mississippi Department of Corrections and the Jackson Police Department. He is survived by his wife and daughter. Shields' father had also served with the Hinds County Sheriff's Office.
As part of our "Plaques for Heroes" campaign, an engraved slate memorial plaque was sent to the Hinds County Sheriff's Office and to Shields' family at no cost to honor his service and his sacrifice to the community of Hinds County.
