Deputy Sheriff Andrew Nuñez - San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department - California

On October 27, 2025, deputies were dispatched to a call of a woman being threatened by an armed man in Rancho Cucamonga, California, shortly after noon.

When Deputy Andrew Nunez of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department arrived, the armed suspect shot him in the head and then fled on a motorcycle.

Deputy Nunez was immediately transported to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where, despite lifesaving measures, he succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect was tracked down by local law enforcement while on his motorcycle on the 210 Highway.  The suspect led them on a high-speed pursuit until he was knocked off his motorcycle by a sedan that swerved into his lane.  This vehicle was being driven by an off-duty officer.  The suspect was transported to the local hospital and survived.

The suspect was later charged with murder with two special circumstances.  The killing of a police officer in the line of duty and killing a police officer in order to escape.  He was also charged with attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, and four counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Deputy Andrew Nunez served with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for six years.  He is survived by his expectant wife, two-year-old daughter, his mother, and four siblings.

As part of our "Plaques for Heroes" campaign, engraved slate memorial plaques were sent to the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department and to Deputy Andrew Nunez's family at no cost to honor his service and his sacrifice to the community of San Bernardino County, California. Our condolences to his family, his department and the community he served.
