Deputy Sheriff Charles Riley - Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office - Louisiana

On October 6, 2025, Deputy Sheriff Charlie Riley was shot and killed while interviewing a suspect at the Iberville Parish Courthouse in Plaquemine, Louisiana.
At approximately 8:00 p.m., Deputy Riley and a detective were interrogating a man relating to a sexual assault investigation. When they attempted to place the man under arrest, a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the suspect grabbed a gun and began firing. Both deputies were shot before one of the deputies was able to return fire.
Deputy Riley and the other deputy were transported to a hospital and Deputy Riley unfortunately succumbed to his wounds. The other deputy was in critical condition. The suspect was also transported to a hospital and he also succumbed to his injuries.
Deputy Riley was a United States Navy veteran and had served with the Iberville Parish Sherriff's Department for six years. Before joining the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Department, Deputy Riley had served with the Gonzales Police Department. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a goddaughter, parents, a sister, and two brothers. Our prayers and condolences to Deputy Riley's family and the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Department.
