On July 1, 2025 at approximately 1:30 a.m., Deputy Sheriff Devin Mason and another deputy, both from the Darlington County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina, arrived at a residence after they had received a tip regarding the location of a man and a woman who had outstanding warrants.
The deputies found the woman standing outside and were able to detain and arrest her. When the deputies entered the residence, they initiated contact with the mother of the male suspect who stated she did not know the location of her son.
Deputy Devin Mason walked to the door of the bathroom and was met with gunfire from the suspect who was hiding inside the bathroom. Both Deputy Mason and his partner returned fire. Deputy Mason was unfortunately mortally wounded and the other deputy was transported to the hospital.
The suspect was shot and killed. The suspect's mother was charged with obstruction of justice.
Deputy Mason had served with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office for over three months. He had completed his field training a week earlier. He is survived by his son, mother, stepfather, and fiancée.
As part of our "Plaques for Heroes" campaign, engraved slate memorial plaques were sent to the Darlington County Sheriffs Office and to Deputy Devin Mason's family at no cost to honor his service and his sacrifice to the community of Darlington County, South Carolina. Our condolences to his family, his department and the community he served.
