Deputy Sheriff WIlliam May was shot and killed in the line of duty on April 2, 2025, while responding to a disturbance call at a Dollar General store at around 2 p.m.
Deputy May arrived at the store and spoke with the individual inside the store. Deputy May escorted the individual outside and was not going to arrest him. As soon as they exited the building, the individual shot Deputy May several times. Deputy May was able to return gun fire and was able to radio for help.
Deputy May was transported to the local hospital. One of the rounds went underneath his bullet proof vest unfortunately. Deputy May passed away about four hours later.
The suspect died at the scene. The suspect was 58 years old.
Deputy May was on an overtime shift and was on his way home when he took this disturbance call. Deputy May served the Walton County Sheriff's Office for eleven years with the last six being as a law enforcement officer and was 44 years old. He is survived by his wife and four kids as well as his parents. Both of his parents retired from the Walton County Sheriff's Office.
