K9 Azi - McKinney Police Department - Texas

On March 13, 2025, K9 Azi was faithfully serving the citizens of McKinney, Texas, when he was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a suspect who had barricaded himself in a hotel room at a Red Roof Inn.

That afternoon, officers had responded to a shooting call and discovered that a female had been shot.  The suspect barricaded himself in a hotel room and threatened to shoot everyone.  The suspected exited the room approximately thirty minutes later at which time, K9 Azi was sent in to apprehend the suspect.  The suspect pulled out a gun and shot K9 Azi, fatally wounding him.  Responding officers returned fire, striking the suspect, and he later succumbed to his wounds at a local hospital.

The female victim who had been shot recovered.  K9 Azi was taken to an Urgent Care Vet Hospital where he later succumbed to his wounds.     

K9 Azi was only 2 years old.  He had served with the McKinney Police Department for approximately 16 months.  Our prayers and condolences to his partner, department, and community.
