K9 Chico - Boerne Police Department - Texas

On April 10, 2025, K9 Chico and his handler conducted a traffic stop.  After completing the traffic stop, K9 Chico was secured in his cage inside the patrol vehicle.

K9 Chico's partner started leaving the parking lot that they were in.  HIs partner was unaware that the door mechanism and safety feature had malfunctioned.  K9 Chico jumped out of the squad and ran onto Interstate 10 which was nearby.  K9 Chico was struck and killed by a vehicle and the driver did not stop.  

The safety feature should have alerted the handler that the door did not close properly. An investigation into the malfunction has been started.

K9 Chico had served with the Boerne Police Department for over a year and was five years old.  Our prayers and condolences for the Boerne Police Department and for K9 Chico's partner.
