As of mid-February 2025, there have been four K9s who have been killed in the line of duty this year.  K9 Kaya of the Streetsboro Police Department (Ohio) was the first one to be killed while working.  

At approximately 5:35 p.m. on 1/7/25, K9 Kaya was let out of his cruiser in order to stretch his legs.  Unfortunately, Kaya got too close to a nearby road and was struck by a passing vehicle.  Kaya's handler, Officer Hall, immediately took him to the emergency center.  Unfortunately, Kaya's injuries were too severe to overcome and he passed a short time later.  The driver of the vehicle did return to the scene and met with officers. 

K9 Kaya was only 3 days away from his 9th birthday.  Kaya had served the Streetsboro Police Department and the Streetsboro community for almost his entire life - just under nine years.
