On July 2, 2026, K9 Leonidas of the Schenectady County Sheriff's Office (New York) passed away while on duty.
K9 Leonidas suffered a heatstroke after the patrol vehicle's alarm system failed to operate. K9 Leonidas was left in the patrol vehicle during a call where he was not required. When his handler returned to the patrol vehicle, the air conditioning unit had failed, and the alarm had not activated. K9 Leonidas was immediately transported to a local veterinarian and despite life-saving measured, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
K9 Leonidas had served with the Schenectady County Sheriff's Office for eight years. Our prayers and condolences.
