K9 Rebel - Albuquerque Police Department - New Mexico

On May 27, 2025, a suspect was tracked to the Comfort Inn after he fled from a SWAT situation.  Crisis negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation before the suspect broke a window and jumped out of his hotel room.  K9 Rebel was deployed and successfully apprehended the suspect.

The suspect grabbed K9 Rebel by the neck and used him as a shield from the police while pointing a gun at them.  Gunfire ensued and K9 Rebel was struck in the crossfire.

The suspect, a convicted felon released on early parole, was shot and killed during the shootout.  K9 Rebel was transported to a local veterinarian, where he succumbed to his wounds two days later.

K9 Rebel had served with the Albuquerque Police Department for over seven years. He was credited with over 900 deployments.  Our prayers and condolences to K9 Rebel's partners, department, and the community.
