K9 Spike - Burbank Police Department - California

On November 22, 2025, K9 Spike of the Burbank Police Department (California) was shot and killed while apprehending a suspect who had fled police.

At around 6:40 p.m., officers had pulled over a vehicle on Buena Vista Street near the northbound Interstate 5 Freeway on-ramp.  A passenger from that vehicle fled on foot.  K9 Spike was deployed to find the fleeing suspect in a nearby residential area.

When K9 Spike located the suspect, the suspect fired multiple shots, striking K9 Spike.  The suspect fled again.  K9 Spike was immediately transported to an emergency veterinarian but succumbed to his wounds.

The suspect was found a few hours later after lengthy search.  When he was found, he also fired at officer hitting multiple patrol vehicles.  Officers returned fire and killed the suspect.

K9 Spike had served with the Burbank Police Department for 21 months.  Our prayers and condolences to K9 Spike's partners.
