Officer Hunter Simoncic - Kansas City Police Department - Kansas

On August 26, 2025, officers from the Kansas City Police (Kansas) Department responded to the reports of gunfire at approximately 12:30 a.m.

When officers arrived, they discovered an unconscious man in the driver's seat of a truck.  As they approached, the driver fled, and officers pursued.  During the pursuit, the suspect changed vehicles and continued to evade offices.

Officer Hunter Simoncic and another officer were laying down stop sticks when the suspect intentionally drove over a median and swerved into Officer Simoncic before driving away.  Officer Simoncic was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect crashed the vehicle he was driving and was taken to the hospital as well with non-life-threatening injuries.  He was arrested for first-degree murder, vehicular homicide, fleeing a police officer, theft, criminal possession of a firearm, and aggravated failure to appear once he was released.  The suspect was a convicted felon and had a warrant for his arrest.  He also had a history of felony resisting arrest and evading law enforcement.

Officer Hunter Simoncic was only 26-years old and had served the Kansas City Police Department for one year and nine months.  He is survived by his parents and a brother.  Our prayers and condolences to the Simoncic family as well as the Kansas City Police Department.
