Sergeant Scott William Heimann - Hays Police Department - Kansas

At approximately 11:00 p.m. on September 27, 2025, officers of the Hays Police Department responded to a call for help from a woman attempting to flee from a domestic violence attack incident in the 2200 block of Downing Street in Hays, Kansas.
While leaving, her attacker hit her car, and she sought cover in a neighbor's home. When officers began to arrive, officers began to set up a perimeter around the attacker's home. While doing so, a shot from inside the home was fired striking Sergeant Scott William Heimann. Sgt. Heimann was immediately treated with life-saving measures and was transported via air to a regional hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 4:00 a.m. on September 28, 2025.
Several local, regional, and state teams responded to negotiate with the shooter. The shooter was ultimately found dead in his home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at around 6:00 a.m.
Sergeant Scot Heimann had served with the Hays Police Department for nine years. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, parents, two brothers, two sisters, grandmother, nieces, and nephews.
As part of our "Plaques for Heroes" campaign, engraved slate memorial plaques were sent to the Hays Police Department and to Sergeant Scott Heimann's family at no cost to honor his service and his sacrifice to the community of Hays, Kansas.
