Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton - Ohio State Highway Patrol - Ohio

On October 16, 2025, Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton of the Ohio State Highway Patrol was killed in the line of duty at approximately 12:00 p.m. on Route 11 in Canfield, Ohio.

Trooper "Nicky" Cayton had responded to a disabled tractor-trailer and was in his patrol vehicle with lights activated.  While in his patrol vehicle, he was struck by a Mack truck that was traveling northbound.  Trooper Cayton's vehicle was pushed into the disabled tractor-trailer and he was killed at the scene.  The driver of the disabled tractor-trailer was transported to the hospital.  The driver of the Mack truck was not injured.  

Trooper Nicholas Cayton was 40 years old.  He was an Ohio Army National Guard veteran and had served with the Ohio State Highway Patrol for 13 years.  He was named Ohio Trooper of the Year in 2022.  Trooper Cayton is survived by his wife, son, daughter, and his parents.  Our condolences and prayers to the Cayton family and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
